Protect Your Accounts Before a Scam
Practical account settings and habits that reduce the impact of credential theft.
Start with unique passwords for every important account. A reputable password manager can generate and store them. Turn on multifactor authentication; an authenticator app or security key is preferable where available. Store recovery codes securely and keep recovery email addresses and phone numbers current.
Update phones, computers, browsers, and security software. Review installed remote-access tools and account sessions. Set transaction alerts with your financial provider and use marketplace payment methods that preserve buyer protection.
Create a household verification rule: unexpected requests involving money, codes, account access, or secrecy are paused and checked using a separate official channel.
